This linoleum block print was done on Culebra, a small undeveloped island off of Puerto Rico. The word Culebra means snake in Spanish and refers to the shape of the island. Culebra is only 7 miles long and 4 miles wide. There are quite a few good snorkeling spots right off the beach. I often wished I could figure out a way to draw under water while snorkeling. Instead I tried to master the art of taking pictures underwater, which is also no small feat. Culebra was a great place to slow down. We did not have a telephone, car, computer or radio. The sounds of the birds, the trade winds and the huge leaves of tropical plants slapping against each other became the everpresent backdrop as I carved the images for this plate. | ||||||||
