This linoleum blockprint was inspired while waiting for the
ferry in St. Kitts, en route to Nevis. Across the street was
a long row of buildings and this woman was sitting wedged
between them. When I got back to the States I enlarged the
photo and noticed the words, Coals for Sale scrawled on
the bin next to her. Many places in the Caribbean people
still cook with charcoal. The charcoal is made on the island
from a particular bush that is burned very slowly to form a
concentrated fuel.
